Xiamen
Fujian's relaxed port, with Gulangyu's villas a short ferry from the downtown waterfront.

A sea city and a car-free island
Xiamen is the soft landing in the south: a working harbor, a university ridge, seafood that tastes like the coast rather than a sauce, and Gulangyu just offshore. The island is the excursion — colonial villas, banyans, piano-museum kitsch, and lanes that are better before the ferries stack up. Sleep on the main island unless you specifically want a quiet Gulangyu night, which means watching the last ferry. Nanputuo Temple sits under the mountain behind the university and is an easy morning. If you are coming from Kinmen, this is also the short crossing, paperwork included.
See
Gulangyu 鼓浪屿
Ferry from the waterfront. Walk the inland lanes, not only the souvenir spine. Vehicles are mostly banned.
Nanputuo 南普陀寺
Temple at the foot of the mountain. Combine with a short climb if the heat allows.
Eight Market or a local wet market 八市
Seafood on ice, breakfast stalls, and a better sense of the city than another viewpoint.
Ring Road at dusk 环岛路
A bike or a slow bus along the shore. The beaches are for walking more than for swimming.
Eat
Shacha noodles
A peanut-chili-seafood broth, customized with fish balls and offal if you want them. The local breakfast.
Oyster omelette
Fujian's version of a dish many Taiwan travelers already love. Sweet potato starch, small oysters, peanut sauce.
Peanut soup and spring rolls
Street sweetness and a crisp roll. A pause between seafood meals, not the whole dinner.
